Nothing is consistent, and nothing is forever. Objects thought to have vanished sometimes reappear. In paleontology, when a fossil disappears from a timeline, it is thought to have gone extinct. But every so often, an almost identical species resurfaces, considered by scientists to be the hypothetical ancestor of that fossil – what is known as a ghost lineage. The creative process can often yield similar results, with inspiration surfacing in bursts. The product is then tucked away, sometimes forgotten, only to be rediscovered and reimagined down the line. For some, it may be evident where the material started and where it ended up, but the hazy middle portion is lost in time.

Created and refined over the last three years, 'Ghost Lineage' sees a move closer to thruoutin's weaving together of experimental and club music, with nods to ambient, gqom, field recordings, and drone.
'Ghost Lineage' builds on thruoutin’s last EP, 'Contingent of Outlying Territory' on RAN MUSIC, released in 2017. The overall mood of the material takes on a darker, more shadowy mood than in previous works. Technically, it was conceived from loops created during live performances. The selections, typically played at 160 BPM for footwork sets, were later slowed down to 127 BPM to cohere more with the gqom direction the EP was adopting. These re-engineered tracks were then transplanted with ambient soundscapes to set the basis of the songs. Three Beijing-based musicians were invited to feature on the release, including JustSyd on vocals (Izolo Khange Ndilale & Takatha), He Kairan on bawu, kaval, kanjira, and mouth harp (Damp With Dew & A Drift in The Ridge), and Dong Yang on frame drum (A Drift in The Ridge), helping to inject delicate textures throughout.
